Repeat prescriptions and 12-month prescribing
What’s changing from 1 February 2026
From 1 February 2026, some long-term medicines can be prescribed for up to 12 months.
Kingsland Family Health Centre is nurse practitioner-led. Our prescribing clinicians focus on safe, evidence-based care that supports prevention and long-term wellbeing.
12-month prescriptions are optional and by request
We will only issue a 12-month prescription if you request it and your prescribing clinician confirms it is safe and appropriate for you.
Many people will still be best supported with shorter prescriptions and more regular review, particularly if you have multiple long-term conditions, your health is changing, you are on higher-risk medicines, or you prefer more frequent check-ins.
Why we still need regular reviews
A prescription review is not just printing a script. It is part of good routine care. We review your health record to check whether your condition is stable and treated to target, whether monitoring is up to date, whether there are side effects or medicine interactions, whether your medicines list is accurate and still needed, and whether there are preventive care opportunities such as screening, immunisations, and heart health checks.
Because a 12-month plan may mean fewer touchpoints, we want to make sure the time we do spend together is high quality and that your care plan still fits your life.
Annual Long-Term Medicines Review required for 12-month prescribing
A 12-month prescription can only be considered after an Annual Long-Term Medicines Review.
This appointment is for medication and diagnosed long-term conditions only. It is a focused review to support safe prescribing and appropriate monitoring.
We often aim to align this review with your birthday month so it is easy to remember and clear when you are due. To make that work, your first prescription after review may be slightly shorter so that future reviews stay in the same month each year.
If you have other concerns to discuss, including new symptoms or additional issues, please book an additional 15-minute appointment so we can give those concerns proper time and attention.
We do not initiate 12-month prescriptions during an acute appointment for another problem, as a 12-month plan needs full attention on long-term condition stability, monitoring, and safety.
Monitoring during the year
Even with a 12-month prescription, some people will still need monitoring during the year.
If blood tests, blood pressure checks, or other monitoring are due, we may request these and provide a shorter repeat until monitoring is complete and reviewed.
Pharmacy dispensing
Even if your prescription is written for 12 months, pharmacies usually dispense medicines in lots, often up to 3 months at a time.

KFHC charges reflect clinical time and responsibility for safe prescribing, monitoring, and follow-up.
